What is this blog about?

In this week’s blog, we take a look at a recent RICS update to measuring guidance. This is essential knowledge for all candidates taking the Measurement competency.

What’s new?

RICS have recently archived RICS Property Measurement (2nd Edition). This was previously the core measurement guidance for surveying professionals.

What guidance do I refer to when measuring?

RICS have confirmed that the appropriate measurement basis from IPMS All Buildings or the Code of Measuring Practice (6th Edition) should be adopted. You must state in your report which measurement basis (or bases) have been adopted).

RICS have also confirmed that they are in the process of updating the Code of Measuring Practice in 2025.

The withdrawal of RICS Property Measurement removes any reference to the former (separate) IPMS Residential and Office standards, in addition to any supplemental guidance provided. This could clear up some areas of confusion relating to how IPMS All Buildings and the Code of Measuring Practice are adopted.

However, withdrawal of RICS Property Measurement (2nd Edition), without the simultaneous introduction of new overarching measurement guidance, leaves a lot of unknowns in measuring best practice at the present time.

Thus, adopting IPMS All Buildings or dual reporting (with the benefits of IPMS emphasised) is advisable until new guidance is published.

How can we help?
